Approximately 5,400 officers serve and protect Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. The Houston Police Department (HPD) has 10 commands, with numerous specialized divisions throughout its jurisdiction. Those include SWAT, Dive Team, Robbery, Homicide, Burglary and Theft, Criminal Intelligence, K-9, Communications, Gang Task Force, and Divisional Tactical Units.

The HPD needs enthusiastic, motivated, and qualified applicants who possess strong character and integrity – people with team values, structure, and discipline. The department specifically recruits veterans because it believes they have those traits. HPD is also a superb fit for veterans because it a paramilitary organization with a chain-of-command and rank structure.

HPD Recruiting attends numerous career fairs and functions attended by active and transitioning personnel as well as reservists. Additionally, it participates in the Army PaYS and Warrior for Life (LoneStar Veterans Association) programs in Houston.
