Sean Walker is a First Data employee who spent 21 years in the Army before leaving as a first sergeant. His main responsibilities were in human resources – great experience for his job as an employment program manager at First Data. He started working for the company in 2012.
First Data is a global technology and payments processing leader, serving more than 6 million merchant locations, thousands of card issuers, and millions of consumers worldwide. First Data’s headquarters are in Atlanta, and it has business operations – and more than 24,000 employees – in 34 countries.
Walker develops and manages both internal and external employment programs. He has established branding materials for the company’s Veterans Initiative, including materials for the company’s career site and fairs. He also translated military occupation specialties to match the careers within First Data and assisted with a Veterans Toolkit.
Walker encourages servicemembers to take advantage of the educational opportunities they are offered – to try to get credentials such as PHR (Professional in Human Resources) certification, Lean Six Sigma, and PMP (Project Management Professional) certification prior to separating. He said that “education, training, values, leadership, and teamwork, along with diversity inclusion in action, accelerated learning curve, technology, and globalization” are attractive to employers.
He also suggested that servicemembers obtain civilian credentials that correspond to their military occupational training before they transition out. And he said that job hunters should not have just one blanket resume to send to every employer. “When developing your resume, make sure you customize it to the position you are applying for,” he said.
