J Dog Junk Removal is a veteran-owned and -operated junk removal company that sells franchises nationally. The company removes junk-related items from residential, commercial, warehouse, and office environments and responsibly disposes of them or donates them to appropriate organizations.
The company is headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, just west of Philadelphia. They conduct business in southeastern Pennsylvania with the expectation of growing nationally. Currently there is one location and two employees. J Dog Junk Removal’s model is designed for franchising a small-employee format.
The company only awards franchises to those with military backgrounds – veteran, active duty or reserve – because it believes they are the most qualified. The opportunity at the organization is for veterans who want to open their own business.
Franchisees remove junk, garbage and recyclables from any property and sort, haul, recycle and discard unwanted items. Whether by using recycling facilities or by donating to local charities, J Dog Junk Removal employs environmentally friendly methods of disposal. Owners are also encouraged to increase their revenue streams by recycling or selling any of the items in their possession.
Discovery’s “HowStuffWorks” calls junk removal one of the top 10 recession-proof businesses. An affordable entry into both the private job market and business ownership is possible with a comparatively low franchise fee of just $15,000 and a total initial investment between $40,000 and $70,000 to join J Dog Junk Removal. Some financing may be available. Franchisees receive the hands-on training, support systems and assistance programs needed to effectively get their businesses running quickly, with a rapid-launch capability of less than 90 days. The J Dog Junk Removal franchise model is flexible and has several ways to start a J Dog Junk Removal franchise. Franchisees can go part-time and work at an existing job until they are able to transition to full-time and eventually all the way up to operating multiple trailers and markets.
Launched by Jerry Flanagan, a U.S. Army veteran, no other franchise has ever been developed by a veteran solely for veterans. J Dog Junk Removal draws from a smaller pool of applicants compared to its competitors, which benefits applicants because they’re non – military prospects.
J Dog Junk Removal is a member of VetFran and is working through multiple military marketing strategies that will reach out to its target audience. Veterans make great franchisees because of their ability to follow orders. Franchising involves a set of goals/missions directed by the franchisor with specific instructions that must be followed to complete the mission. This is similar to work performed in the military.
Flanagan served in the Army for two years, separating as an E-4 Specialist who focused on combat signaling. As the president and founder, he’s responsible for all aspects of company from junk removal to sales, marketing and operations. He started the company in 2011 and is the first veteran to start a veteran-only franchise concept.
“The experience I gained in the military allowed me to acquire a tremendous work ethic and confidence,” Flanagan said. “My ability to learn quickly and take on challenges helped me grow in the civilian workplace. When my colleagues were tired and ready to quit, I was always charged and ready to work. This allowed me to advance quickly throughout my civilian career.”
He knows that men and women with military experience are built to succeed, and that’s why he is only interested in signing up veterans, active duty and reserve as franchisees.
“My company plans on using these skills and teach franchisees the skills they need to succeed in junk removal,” Flanagan said. “Their ‘can-do’ attitude will take our business model passed the competition in sales and growth.”
Being open to new and different alternatives is important, he said.
“My advice to veterans interested in joining our team is to be open-minded and allow your military training empower you,” Flanagan said.
